Practice -Note Taking
Homework
General:
✅ Prefer taking notes using handwriting over typing on a computer
✅ Write notes in the margin of books
Copying text:
✅ Avoid this as much as possible
✅ Transcribe instead
Highlighting text:
✅ Avoid this as much as possible
✅ Take notes in the margin about why you highlighted the passage
✅ "Scratch" highlights that you don't deem relevant anymore in hindsight
✅ Don't just study your highlights, especially if out of context
✅ Review yesterday's highlights before push on with your book/article
Review questions:
✅ Instead of transcribing, write questions to your future self about the material
✅ Answer these questions using the Spaced Repetition principles you learned about in module 5
✅ Prefer noting the source of the answer over writing the answer next to the question - you want to make your brain active in recalling the answer
Flashcards:
✅ When using pre-made flashcards, evaluate their relevancy and authority beforehand.
✅ When making your own, use visual metaphors (see module 10 after)
What to take notes of:
✅ Clearly define your learning goals first
✅ Before taking notes, think about if this is productive to your learning goal or not
✅ When scanning documents, pay special attention to nouns (concepts) and action verbs (procedures). These tend to be the most relevant
